Taking pictures on a cruise trip

Life is often considered to be an accumulation of memories by many people. However, whether this concept is true or not is beyond the scope of this article. But, we know that if you were going on a cruise then you would definitely want to have a copy of your vacation memories not just in your mind but also on film or holiday video. Later on when you look at the pictures that you have taken, not only do they bring back pleasant feeling but also helps you to remember details that you would have forgotten. It doesn't matter of you are an amateur photographer or a professional photographer with sophisticated equipments and perfect knowledge of lights and angles, this article will give you some tips that you may find useful. Remember, these tips do not aim to improve your photographic techniques but will help you to understand the "soft" side of taking photos. Before you start taking pictures of your cruise, you should remember that your cruise is meant to be a holiday and not an extended posing session in front of the camera. Photographs should be taken not to prove your presence on the ship, but to remember the atmosphere and the environment of your cruise trip. Hence, it is better if you take pictures of things that will help you remember the trip than of your family displacing a theatrical sign or all gathered around the railing. Another best way to take pictures is by not warning the person that you are about to click his photograph. By clicking pictures in this method you will be able to have loads of fun. You may end up with a few blurred pictures, but you will be able to capture the true spirit of the trip. These pictures will also tell a much nicer story than any boring group photo. You should not forget to take pictures of the surroundings of the ship. Traveling by boat or taking a cruise on a ship is not an everyday experience, so it is always better to take a few photos of the surrounding of the ship for photographic remembrance. You should also not forget to take pictures of the oceanic panorama, the porthole of your cabin and the ship crew in their uniform. However, you should remember to be a little bit creative and not to take just random pictures of the cruise. If you decide to take pictures of the ocean and the ship then it is better to use the optimal settings of your camera and to take your time to find a better angle for the picture. For instance, a picture of the ocean that has the edge of the ship of your trip or the frame of your porthole, will look much better and will also be a better trigger for your memory than a mere snapshot of the ocean. Finally, you should remember not to overdo the taking pictures experience. Unless you want to enter your pictures in a photography contest, it is advisable to leave all the sophisticated cameras and equipment like the tripod stands and several sets of lens at home. It is best to a use a regular camera or a disposable one for family vacations or cruise trips. At home when you open your album, you will do it not to see if the color balance is correct, but to remember the fun times that you had enjoyed on your cruise trip. In the end, just relax, enjoy your trip and say cruise!

Ballyliffin golf club s history of success and failures

Ireland is a bastion of golf course, whether be it parkland or links courses, and they have more than enough for its 4 million population to accommodate many other golfers from all over the world. Blessed with beautiful land and scenic views, vacation golf spots in Ireland are a definite must-play and should provide a wondrous time whether you are just a beginner or a seasoned golfer. To those who have already gone and played at the Ballyliffin Golf Club, they have been blessed of having a chance to play at two great golf courses adjacent to each other. Both straddles the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and provides a challenging game as the wind constantly blows erratically swaying the flight of the golf ball. Either the old links or the Glashedy links provide a relentless pursuit to providing a fun yet unpredictable day of golfing with the best of the old and new provided to its members and visitors. Before the Ballyliffin Golf Club enjoyed its vast popularity today, it has experienced a number of success and failures that have shaped it to be one of the more exciting golf links Ireland has to offer. The concept of starting a golf club in Ballyliffin started out in the later part of the 1940's after the Second World War. By then, a group of people interested in the idea banded together and leased lands and converted it into a 9-hole golf course. The club itself prepared the greens before playing, doing the menial tasks of mowing the grass and checking the area. But the development of the club and the course itself was a slow and painful process. With such a small club that doesn’t have really any resources at all, frustrations and doubts on whether the club should be continued at all flourished. Then the impending end of the lease also was hanging over their heads and the future of their club was slowly darkening. But the sun shone the little golf club from Ballyliffin when the landowners agreed to extend their lease. The club's association with the Irish Christian brotherhood has also helped it recruit more players and improve their revenues. By the time the 1960's were ushering in, the confidence of its members soared and the prospect of owning the land was getting brighter. Then by the late 60's problems with the land arose again as the owners weren’t keen on renewing the lease once again. This prompted the club to look for a larger area to lease and convert into a links course. By 1970, the Ballyliffin Golf Club transferred to a much bigger area and construction soon started. Barely three years after 18 holes were ready to be played. But problems soon arose again. Financial concerns plagued the club and the seawall was being eaten up by the sea as more gravel were being removed for the construction. A masterfully planned charity, bazaars and concerts saved the club from financial disaster and the stopping of construction by the sea saved the property. Soon, more members joined the club and green fees were rising with its new found fame adding more finances to the club's coffers. A new clubhouse was now opened and more facilities and amenities were being put up. Five decades after the original group members decided to start the Ballyliffin Golf Club, a new course was now added. By 1993, the construction started on the new course beside it and was finished two years after. Many professional and golf enthusiasts that the new championship links course was stunningly beautiful and was well designed. With the success Ballyliffin Golf Club has experienced, and the failures that has made it what it is today, you can be sure that a golfing trip to this eventful course would be well worth the long trip from across the globe.

Holidays outdoors in madrid

You should always stop and smell the roses. You can do just that in Retiro Park in Madrid. But that is just the beginning of the magic at the Parque del Buen Retiro. While the park is only 300 acres, not massive for a park, that space is well used to display sculptures and monuments. A number of events for the holidays call the area around the park’s lake home, and this small space has grown from a place just to take a stroll into a not-to-miss attraction in the city. Once upon a time this park was the part of a royal palace belonging to Phillip IV. You can see some of that history in the Casуn Del Buen Retiro as well as the Museo del Ejйrcito. Unfortunately, the other buildings that would have shown this history were destroyed early in the 19th century during the Napoleonic wars. No longer a building for war, the Casуn instead is the home of great works of art, 19th and 20th century paintings. Among the items in the collection are pieces from the Spanish painter Sorolla. To learn about the warfare history of Spain, you should plan a trip to the Ejйrcito. It is now the most prominent of Spain’s Army museums. Among their claims to fame, a sword called La Tizona that belonged to El Cid, the famous Spanish Warrior. In addition there is a cross that was carried across the ocean by Columbus as he took his trip to discover America, and other armor and artifacts to study. The park has been open to the public for about 140 years, although it was created over 370 years ago. Now it is a place where residents and visitors alike can stroll along the walkways enjoying the lush vegetation, and also enjoying the sounds of street musicians, and the views of jugglers and other street performers. Holidays have the area filled with a festive flair. Looking for something extra peaceful to do. Near the northern entrance of the park is the Estanque del Retiro Lake. If you want a new view of the park, you can rent a boat and take in the view from the water as you row across the lake. Along the lakeside you will see the 1922 statue of King Alfonso XII atop his horse, seemingly riding along the shore. There is also another lake at the opposite end of the park. Next to this lake is the Crystal Palace or Palacio de Cristal. It was originally created as a home for a number of exotic plants and was created in the image of a similar building in London, back in 1887. The park even offers something for art lovers, with the Palacio de Velбzquez. Inside this building are some of the temporary exhibits of the Queen Sofia museum. Then there is the place where you can literally smell the roses, the Rosaleda. This is a magnificent rose garden that is a stopping point for all who visit the park. In the midst of the beauty of the roses is a striking statue showing Satan as a fallen angel, titled El Angel Caнdo Once you have worked up an appetite, the Serrano Street Restaurants of Madrid are not far away.

Hello from toronto part 1 a first little driving tour the city viewed through the eyes of first time visitors

So my brother is in town, together with his wife and 2 friends from my little home town in Austria. It is everybody's first time in North America and their initiation to Toronto. Just to give you ideas of dimensions: Austria has a population of about 9 million and the country extends about 900 km from east to west while the Greater Toronto area nowadays probably has about 4 to 5 million people and Lake Ontario alone is over 300 km long. The first thing my visitors noticed was the difference in size: the size of the city, the size of the lake, the size of cars, the size of supermarkets, and even of refrigerators. On Sunday we started off with a little driving tour of Toronto where I first took my visitors down to the lakefront by the historic Art Deco style R. C. Harris Filtration Plant. All of them love water and to have a lake as big as an ocean so close by fascinated them. After a leisurely drive on Queen Street through the quaint Beaches neighbourhood we parked the car close to the St. Lawrence Market and started our walk around. Since my brother is a chef and always loves to purchase market-fresh food, I initially took him to the St. Lawrence Market which always has an antique sale on Sunday. The food market is actually closed on Sunday. We checked out the wares from old furniture to cameras to various knick-knacks. Our exploration continued westwards along Front Street past historic 19th century houses and of course past the famous triangular-shaped Flatiron Building which has a mural on its west side. Approaching Yonge Street we walked past the Hockey Hall of Fame, a historic Beaux-Arts former bank building, the magnificent Royal York Hotel, built in 1929, once the largest hotel in the British Commonwealth. One of the things that fascinated my visitors most was how old and new can coexist right next to each other: shiny skyscrapers are located right beside historic sandstone churches. Our walking tour continued past Union Station, Toronto's impressive central railway station, built between 1914 and 1927 as a joint construction project by the Canadian Pacific Railway and Grand Trunk Railway (now the Canadian National Railway). Its monumental scale, classical detail and rational, ordered planning were hallmarks of the style. The station is massive and takes up an entire block on Front Street between York Street and Bay Street. The Great Hall of the Station is 250 ft. long and 84 ft. wide. Our walk continued further west on Front Street past the Convention Centre to the base of the CN Tower and the entrance to the Skydome, Toronto's multi-purpose stadium with a retractable roof, now called the Rogers Centre. We then snaked our way up through the Entertainment District to Queen Street where we admired Osgoode Hall, built in the 1830s, and now an oasis of green in the city. An ornate iron fence, built in 1867, renowned for its peculiar "cow gates," surrounds the property and its beautiful gardens. The cow gates in particular fascinated my visitors. Our next stop was at New City Hall and Old City Hall, opened in 1899, which racked up construction costs of more than $2.5 million at the time which caused great controversy in those days. Continuing past the Bay Department Store on Queen we passed the Metropolitan United Church, an English style cathedral dating from 1872, whose churchyard was filled with people enjoying the warm day. Once back in the car we drove through the U of T campus, my Alma Mater and we stopped briefly to check out Hart House and Kings College. Then we headed down to Chinatown at Spadina and Dundas and my visitors marvelled at this exotic, busy market area. Our last stop on the tour was Kensington Market, a lively little neighbourhood full of food and clothing stores and restaurants where we ended up picking up fresh vegetables, dry beans, and a variety of cheeses for some of the scrumptious meals to come. My brother, the chef, marvelled at the variety of food available here, combined with the inexpensive prices a food lover's dream. We took our loot home where my husband was waiting for us with a big brunch to strengthen ourselves for attending a birthday party of one of my friends that had the motto of "let out your inner child". The party was unique in that it involved such time-honoured Toronto traditions as hitting a piсada while a bunch of adults were playing with water guns, chasing one another around the house with buckets of water dropping on the combatants from the second floor. I think our visitors had a full day, from getting a first taste of Toronto, to participating in a rather eventful birthday party, their first impressions were very positive and they were looking forward to exploring more of this exciting city.

Proper socks for your hiking adventure abroad

There are many beautiful places to hike whether during a trip abroad or a nearby national park. Inexperienced hikers may one to choose a guided tour, especially if you are abroad in a new place while experienced hikers may venture out on their own. Regardless of your experience level or location, there are some things to which every hiker must heed. Finding and investing in a good pair of boots is important, but you might be surprised to find that selecting socks can be even more challenging than finding that perfect boot. Let me explain. Hiking socks are not just socks. Sport socks will not serve your hiking needs. The socks you wear for tennis or basketball are not adequate for a long hike. Good hiking socks are thick, comfortable and sturdy and have great moisture-wicking and thermal properties. Moisture-wicking is a must in hiking. “Wicking” is simply transporting sweat away from your foot. Without this feature, you can develop such things as fungi, blisters or chafing among others. It’s not even about the smell at this point, but rather health problems. That alone should get you out to the store purchasing a quality pair of socks! If your hike is of any significant length, you will want your socks to have good thermal properties. In hot climates, the sock needs to pull the heat away from the foot and exit it out of the boot. In colder climates, the socks help keep the feet in a comfortable range of warmth. It is quite a technological wonder that socks can perform these to opposite goals, but they do. Even better, they do that while providing comfort, support and moisture-wicking as described above. For those who are still skeptical, go out and try a good pair of socks with some good hiking boots. You will be impressed. Cotton is a good choice as far as material, but clever manufacturers have gone beyond nature’s material and now offer other excellent choices in socks. They have combined blends such as Lycra or wool and micro-geometry to provide excellent thermal control, comfort, support and moisture-wicking capabilities. As far as fit, socks should have thicker areas around the heel, ankle bone and toe. These areas incur the most wear and tear. Also, avoid socks that have ridges near the toes or ankle bone especially, as ridges can irritate your foot similar to having a small stone in your boot. They should be long enough to be pulled up and folded over your boot. Even if they have some elasticity at the top, folding them down helps prevent the sock from sliding inside your boot. Keep in mind that hiking socks are more expensive than other socks, ranging from $10 per pair and higher. But, you do not want to find yourself replacing hiking socks every other month. So, invest in several good pairs and take care of your feet!

Making air travel a breeze part 3 enjoying the ride

So, you’ve made it through security and are ready to get your vacation under way. Unfortunately, you still have a long flight to sit through. Yet, flying doesn’t have to be a miserable experience – even if you are traveling with children. Here are some travel tips to help your whole family enjoy your time in the air. As “airline food” isn’t exactly a mouthwatering phrase, it is a good idea to pack some food in your carry-on bag. While it may be difficult to pack an entire meal, there are plenty of healthy snacks that can fight your hunger. Start with healthy items like dried fruit and granola. If you are looking for a little more protein, add some jerky to your bag. If you have plenty of healthy options in your bag, you can more easily resist the urge to munch on the less-healthy fare aboard the flight. Keep in mind that the air inside of airplane cabins is always very dry. As a result, you might experience a thirst that can’t be quenched by the irregular, less than generous drink service. An extra bottle of water or juice in your carry-on bag can go a long ways towards eliminating this discomfort. If you are one of the many who experience motion sickness, consider taking a pill before boarding the plane. For international flights to the Caribbean or elsewhere, a motion sickness medication may also help you to sleep through much of the flight, allowing you to awake rested and relaxed at your destination. You have to try your best to relax. Everyone has a different outlet for relaxation, so here is a list of activities to keep your stress at a minimum – whatever your interests may be: • If you have a laptop computer, you can easily listen to music, watch DVDs or even get some work done. Just make sure you charge your batteries before flying. • While MP3 players are nice, you don’t need the newest gadget to zone out airplane noise. You can plug noise-canceling headphones into any type of portable music player. • Books and magazines are great ways to pass the time. If you find the noise irritating, you could even put on noise-canceling headphones without music and eliminate most distractions. • Simple games like crosswords and sudokus can alleviate stress and exercise your mind. One of the best tips for air travel with children is to secure seats in the front row of the cabin. In the front row of seats, your family will be granted some extra space and privacy – luxuries that are especially helpful when flying with infants or toddlers. If you have toddlers, you should also find it easier to let your children play, stretch or wander a little at the front of the aircraft. When flying with children internationally, most travel professionals recommend non-stop flights. Non-stop flights can be helpful as they allow your children to sleep uninterrupted and prevent potentially stressful hours of flight changes. Additionally, your kids will certainly be happy to arrive at your vacation destination as soon as possible. However, there are some benefits to taking breaks between flights. For instance, if you are flying to the Caribbean from the northern U. S., your children might become impatient on such a long flight. With a brief layover in a southern city, you can relieve some of your family’s stress from being cooped up for a whole day. A break between flights will also allow you to pick up snacks and drinks, while your children can stretch and walk around freely for a little while. You should also make sure that you pack all the things your children might need in a carry-on bag. This includes everything from food and medications to extra clothing and a blanket. Older children will probably be entertained by many of the items on the adult list above, but also consider packing items like stuffed animals and art materials. You should try to avoid toys with small parts – such as board games, building blocks and model kits – and your child’s noisier playthings. If all else fails, just remind your family that you are all en route to a wonderful Caribbean vacation.

Launch into spring with an outdoor clock

If you are into outdoor landscaping and gardening, you obviously spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. And as the weather turns from the cold and rainy days of winter to warm spring days, visions of crocuses, tulips and outdoor barbeques take over. But spending so much time outside, especially doing the things you love, can certainly make you lose track of the time. So, why not add an outdoor clock to your patio area for everyone to enjoy? Outdoor clocks add a nice touch to any garden or outdoor entertainment area. They also give gardeners a way of keeping track of the time as they work on their lawn and gardens. Better yet, they can add a decorative touch to your entertainment areas as well. And as you know, these areas can be difficult to decorate, especially in locations with varying weather and climates. Will Weather Be An Issue? Despite your climate, it is always best to use outdoor clocks that are waterproof and weatherproof. These clocks are usually sealed with weatherproofing sealant and gaskets to ensure that the rain and dust stay out of the clock’s mechanisms. Most outdoor clocks will be clearly labeled as such, but it pays to double check the packaging just to make sure. Even though most outdoor clocks are manufactured to be weatherproof, you can protect them further by selecting a location for them that is sheltered from the elements. The best location for an outside wall clock is higher on the wall where it can benefit from the protection of the overhang (eaves) of your roof. If you live in the Northern climates, the ultimate protection during the winter months is to take your clock down and store it in a warm, dry location. Before putting your clock in storage, perform any required maintenance per the operating manual and you can be ensured of enjoying your clock through many seasons. Outdoor Clock Features Can outdoor clocks do more than just provide the time? Of course they can. The more elaborate outside clocks have a host of features that add to the functionality and usefulness of the clock. Some come with a thermometer and barometer to monitor the weather. Add a rain gauge and you will have a bona fide weather station at your disposal. A very nice feature that is offered with some of the higher-end models is a wireless display. This allows your outside clock to transmit data to a second display unit inside your home. Imagine being able to have the time, temperature, and barometric pressure at your fingertips whether you are on the patio or inside the house. And don’t forget, outdoor clocks also make the perfect gift for your friends and family members who enjoy your passion for outdoor living. They especially make a terrific housewarming gift for friends that have just become new homeowners. So, whether you are looking to decorate your porch, patio, gazebo, or other outside living area, an outdoor clock can be the perfect choice.

Golfing in spain along the mediterranean coast

Golf holidays in Spain are popular year round, especially in the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca regions where the weather allows for golfing even in the winter. Most resorts are located on the eastern coastline along the Mediterranean Sea and new courses continually to be built in this area. Golf resorts in Spain are a great getaway for those in need of a break from the winter weather back home. Information the courses in these regions can be found online or through a travel agent. You can find pictures of the courses, locations, maps and information on upcoming events. Many golf resorts also offer instruction to its guests with an onsite golf school. Professional golfers can give lessons in groups or one-on-one instruction. Naturally, group instruction is less expensive that individual lessons. You can choose whatever meets your instruction needs. Some resorts even offer instruction for children. When not working with a golf instructor, you can practice your newly learned or refreshed skills on the driving range. Most resorts also have an onsite golf shop which sell equipment and apparel. There is no need to worry if you forgot to pack something. Some also rent clubs, bags and balls which is excellent for those preferring not to bring these items from home. The club house is also a nice amenity allowing you to change and shower afterwards. Some resorts also have a sauna and food services available. A fairly common complaint among golfers is when other golfers play at a slow pace. There are some things you can do to avoid this and remain courteous to fellow golfers. Be ready to play when it is your turn. When it is your turn, play your shot and move to the next tee to mark your scorecard. Courtesy on the golf course is important to everyone having an enjoyable time. There are also other activities offered at golf resorts. When not on the course, you or your family can enjoy the pool, entertainment, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and other nearby attractions. The Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca regions are such popular vacation destinations you will have plenty to do when not golfing.

However, you find your car of choice at the price for you, the cost of driving throughout the country will be a much better value for your money. When you have your own car, you can explore the area when you want and at the pace you want. It will be much easier to travel throughout the area to get a taste of all of the culture, history, attractions and sightseeing available making for such a memorable vacation. You will not need to rely on public transportation or the continual incurrence of cab fares, but rather enjoy each drive and destination in an air-conditioned car on the timetable you set. Planning ahead is a good idea and, as mentioned earlier, browsing car hire services online is a good way to find discounts on cars. The internet is a great solution for every traveler, whether new to Spain or a regular tourist. You can take care of all the details online, from making the payment arranging insurance needs. You will then only need to get the car once you have arrived in the area, but you will find that many car hire companies will even pick you up from the airport. Be sure to check on this convenient service when making the arrangements. At that point, all you have to think about is the freedom you have to explore when you want and in the comfort of your own car.

Hello from sicily a driving tour through lipari and a magical evening in vulcano

Our beautiful dinner in the old town of Lipari last night was another opportunity to get to know Sicilian cuisine. A light-hearted evening was followed by a night of deep sleep and by 8 am this morning I stuck my head out of the boat: another gorgeous day! Everyone was still sleeping and I had about an hour and half to walk into town and catch another glimpse of picturesque Lipari. I mailed my postcards and picked up some fresh locally grown oranges for the gang on the boat. Once back at the boat, my co-travellers Herbert, Claudia and I were ready for another excursion: a driving tour of Lipari. Herbert is a German TV travel journalist and is planning to bring a television crew to Sicily next year to film the Italian language learning experience aboard a sailboat provided by Laboratorio Linguistico. Naturally he has to scout out the various locations to check into sights of interest, lighting, and facilities – all the factors that will have a bearing on the shoot. He had asked our captain Francesco to arrange for a local guide who would drive him around the island and generously invited Claudia and me to come along. Our driver Pasquale Liberatore (what a great name), a Lipari resident, arrived punctually at 9:30 am to pick us up at the Lipari pleasure craft harbour to take us on a tour through this beautiful island. Pasquale packed us into his vehicle and off we went. His personal story, incidentally, is also quite interesting: Pasquale was born and grew up in Lipari and then in the lat 1950s his family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, where there is a large community of southern Italian йmigrйs. Southern Italy went through real economic hardship after World War II, and many hundreds of thousands of people emigrated from the mainland and the islands. Pasquale spent a few decades in Australia but as the only person from his immediate family, he returned to Lipari to live here. He has now been back for about 15 years and loves living here although he occasionally misses his brothers and sisters and their families who are still living in Australia. Of course he speaks excellent English, and that is how he markets himself – Pasquale, the English-speaking cab driver and tour guide. The first place he took us to was a village north of Lipari called Canneto which has a beautiful waterfront location, draped around a horseshoe-shaped bay. We decided to catch a little late breakfast first, and I really enjoyed my refreshing lemon granita, a typical Sicilian specialty – crushed ice that comes in a variety of flavours, a great idea for starting off the day. Herbert enjoyed a fresh croissant and an espresso. On our way out of the bar, parked by the lungomare, the waterfront promenade, a local fisherman was selling fresh fish he caught this morning out of a little three-wheeled cargo vehicle. He shouted out the names of the fish with a peculiar cadence that was sure to attract the attention of passers-by. This is one thing I noticed about Sicily: street selling, particularly of fish, produce and other edible products, is still a popular way of marketing one’s merchandise. We continued our drive towards the white pumice quarries that Lipari is famous for. This volcanic stone is used for the production of cement, as an abrasive and a cosmetic exfoliant. Pumice is a highly porous, extremely light-weight, usually white stone that is formed during volcanic eruptions. Just a few dozen meters away from the pumice quarries we stopped to see another type of volcanic stone: obsidian, or volcanic glass, which is a dark-brown, dense, virtually opaque and heavy substance. Pasquale explained that the chemical make-up of obsidian and pumice is essentially the same, but that they are ejected a different temperatures during volcanic eruptions. Obsidian has been used for eons; because of its flint-like quality it can easily be shaped into blades and spear tips and other cutting instruments. Today obsidian is even used as for surgical scalpels which produce less trauma than steel scalpels. Another less high-tech use of obsidian is as a gemstone, and many stores in the Eolian Islands sell jewelry crafted from this volcanic glass. We came around the northern tip of Lipari where a beautiful view opened up toward the island of Salina. Pasquale took us up a mountain road to the Santuario di Chiesa Vecchia di Quattropani, a beautiful country church located on a hill with a phenomenal view over several of the Eolian Islands. As we were standing by the railing of the terrace, a jet fighter flew by at what seemed like supersonic speed, literally a few meters above the water. By the time we realized where the booming sound was coming from it was already disappearing into the horizon. Another 15 minutes further on the west side of the island we stopped at an abandoned kaolin quarry. Kaolin is a silica-based mineral that is used in the production of ceramics, as a food additive and even as an ingredient in toothpaste. Everything was blooming around here, and yellow and purple flowers lit up the crags overlooking the sea. At the southern tip of Lipari we stopped on a parking lot beside a private village and had a phenomenal view of the nearby island of Vulcano. We could even see the columns of sulphur fumes emanating from the fissures near the crater of this still active volcano. A flat stretch of land called Vulcanello is located in front of the main island of Vulcano. This part of the island appeared only about 2000 years ago in a volcanic eruption. Volcanism is still reshaping the earth all around here. We had seen almost every corner of this small island and Pasquale dropped us off near downtown Lipari. This guided tour provided by a local expert was a great way of getting to know the island of Lipari. Claudia and I headed straight for an outdoor restaurant on the piazza by Marina Corta and had a well-deserved lunch and another nice stroll through town before we started to head back to our sailboat. Around 3 pm we said goodbye to Lipari and set sail for our next destination: Vulcano. On our way our skipper Francesco took us past some very interesting rock formations at the southern end of Lipari. One protruding rock column was reminiscent of a praying pope while several tall isolated rocks grew right out of the sea in front of Lipari. We circled around to the eastern side of Vulcano and dropped anchor in the bay in front of Porto di Levante, the only landing place on the island. Several ferry boats were making their entries to and exits from the bay, and several other sailboats were anchored at a distance from the island. Now it was time for our Italian lesson: for two hours in the late afternoon Claudia, Agnieszka and I were studying concepts such as the Italian Condizionale as well as the Congiuntivo under the guidance of our expert teacher Franco. You would definitely be hard-pressed to find a more stimulating environment to study Italian than a sailboat anchored in a beautiful bay in Southern Italy. The wonderful thing about this sailing trip has been so far that it has been a nearly perfect immersion in Italian, where we are hearing the language all day and both our teachers communicate only in Italian with us. This concept is as close to full immersion as one can imagine, and the learning process is very intense and fast. For the evening we stayed on the boat and watched a beautiful sunset which bathed the entire scene in hues of pink and purple. After our on-board dinner we retreated outside where Agnieszka, a gifted singer, and Franco, a great guitar player, teamed up and entertained us with many different soulfully delivered classics. Sitting on a sailboat at night, by candlelight, in the beautiful bay of Vulcano, listening to the touching melodies of two gifted artists, was a magical, almost spiritual experience. I knew tomorrow was going to be our last day on this sailing trip, but I didn’t want this moment to end…..

Top summer vacation tips

Whether you are traveling by plane, train or automobile, summer vacations are the perfect opportunity to get away to a favourite spot or experience new sights and adventures. Most important, it is a time to be together and enjoy each other’s company. If however, your trip is not planned correctly, you will spend your vacation stressed out! So regardless if you are packing up the kids in the back of the van or traveling solo to exotic destinations, here are some travel tips to make this summer vacation your best one yet: Pack Right Easier said than done right? Packing is a fine balance of bringing what you really need without taking too much. How do you do it? Planning ahead and having a really good list. Bring anything you absolutely must have, bring co-ordinated clothing you can mix and match and make sure to have a list prepared well in advance so you don’t forget anything. Don’t bring too much of anything, you will not wear six pairs of shoes I promise you, and don’t bring anything that can be bought along the way if you really need it. Have Plenty of Sun Screen, Hats and Sunglasses The sun is stronger in the summer time and UV rays keep increasing. There is nothing worse then getting sunburned on the first few days of your summer vacation and spending the rest of it uncomfortable. Sun protection is more important now then ever before. Be Flexible Leave a little wiggle room in your plans. Give yourself plenty of time for delayed flights and traffic jams. Even if you do not get an opportunity to do something as planned, enjoyable rest stops or detours can be used to explore and can end up being even more memorable than the planned stops. Bring A Camera This one sounds obvious I know, but you would be surprised how many people either forget to bring the camera or the extra batteries or the memory card (in the old days it used to be the film) etc. Prepare your camera gear in advance so you have it ready to go, you do not want to miss that great sunset or your child’s first encounter with the dolphin. Keep The Kids Amused If you are traveling with kids, unless you love to hear “Are we there yet?” over and over, make sure they have enough to stay amused. Have them pack their own travel bags with things they love in order to keep themselves occupied during the trip on the plane or in the car. You can also find inexpensive travel games in stores, or you can play your own such as "I Spy" or the license plate game. Be Prepared For Rain or Cooler Weather There is nothing worse then packing t-shirts and shorts only to be hit with a cool spell and spending your summer vacation trying to stay dry and warm. Even if you are traveling to a hot desert, be prepared with basic rain gear and a warm jacket and vice versa. Be Ready For An Emergency If traveling by car keep an emergency kit handy that includes jumper cables, basic hand tools, flares or reflective warning triangles, a first aid kit, a flashlight with fresh batteries, and a cell phone if possible. What Not To Do On Your Summer Vacation There are a few things you should also not do in order to have a great summer vacation. First, try to avoid traveling during peak times, this means long weekends in the summer, unless you are a sucker for punishment. It also means rush hours in the city if you are driving, try to plan your time around these hours. Don’t break the bank. A recent Expedia survey found that 57 percent of travelers blow their vacation budgets on food and drinks. Ways to get around this include staying at all inclusive resorts and booking rooms with a kitchenette. Before you visit a particular city, check out what activities are free to do there. Especially for kids, there may be lots of parks, museums or just interesting things to look at that will not cost anything. And the most important tip for having a great summer vacation? Don’t overdue it. You are on vacation, don’t plan too much into a short amount of time, and leave room to just r-e-l-a-x. Enjoy the glorious summer days and nights, as we all know, they go by way to fast.

Less self catering more being catered to

Consider throwing time into the wind and taking off on a voyage to explore new worlds, meet new people, and build up a number of new experiences and memories. That is what is waiting for you when you decide to go on a long cruise holiday. Holidays at sea are often shorter than you would like. Once you really get into the groove of things, the holiday is over, and then you go home and are dreaming of the next holidays where you can get out and enjoy yourself and maybe do more next time. Well, why wait until next time? Why not take a long voyage this time? Consider these options, being somewhere that is a self catering environment where you have to take care of all the details, or being on a cruise ship where you are treated like royalty and all your needs are met. Longer cruises mean a longer time of being pampered, and more time to get to know your ship, as well as more destinations for the ship to stop at along the way, meaning more adventures for you to experience. These don’t have to be month-long cruises, although they could be. But you can start with cruises that are about a week long. A popular of these cruises is A San Diego to Baja, Mexico cruise on the Carnival Cruise Ship Elation. This 885 foot long floating resort offers all the comforts of home, plus many of the luxuries you are not used to from your home in one large sailing package. For something a little longer, there is a 15-day Panama Canal trip. At this length, you can enjoy a completely relaxing experience in which time you will become at home on the ship, get to know your way around, and be able to take the most advantage of what it has to offer. Another two-week cruise trip will take you back in time through the Isles of Greece. The 14-day trips will give you the chance to see 12 of the Greek Islands including Naxos and Mykonos. During your stops, you will be able to see the ancient ruins of this region and enjoy the beaches, thinking back to a time when some of the worlds intellectual giants were looking at the same horizon. If you’re really adventurous, you can take a full month to travel to Europe and back. You could choose docking in Ireland, France or Holland. If you don’t want to spend quite as much time at sea, you could make it a one-way sail and fly the other way. Flying to Europe and then sailing to New York will give you a feel of what it was like in centuries past when immigrants were heading to the New World. While at first glimpse it may seem it costs a lot to take such a long cruise, when you really look at the numbers, it is not as bad as it first seemed. Since your cruising cost covers your room, all your meals and many entertainment items it is a great deal and a great way to see the world.
