By the numbers
Everyone knows there are certain things that simply do not go together: oil and water, fire and ice, nerds and jocks. However, an interesting trend is developing in cross-cultural enjoyment. More jocks than ever have been working Sudoku puzzles as a way of empowering and perfecting their critical thinking skills. While it seems unusual to see a mathematic puzzle in a baseball dugout something even more unusual is in the stands. Scores of nerds (engineers, accountants, computer geeks) now fill baseball's box seats. The reason for the attraction to poindexters everywhere may be that baseball, more than any other sport, celebrates and glorifies numbers. The records One of the things that keeps baseball fans coming back, tuning in and going to the stadium is to watch records be made and broken. It's interesting to know the top record holders in each category and watch their achievement pursued. Look up a baseball record sheet on the Web and you may be spending a long time running down list of everything from most hits by a left-hander in a single-season to the highest number of steals from a pitcher. Watching somebody approach and take a record is an exciting visceral experience, as we hold out hope to see a record challenged. Currently, baseball fans are fixated on whether or not Barry bonds can beat Hank Aaron's 755 homerun mark. Nerds, who love memorizing and categorizing numbers, find themselves right at home watching records stand and predicting their fall. Statistics Of course, you don't have to wait for a major record to be broken to get excited about numbers in baseball. Every single game, every single player, and every single pitch has been placed in categories for you. Listening to the baseball announcer is a lot like listening to a very excited math professor most of the time. They tell you batting percentages, pitching averages, field lengths and times at bat. Many baseball parks offer free scorecards to fans so that they can track the pitches and hits themselves. Statistics are attractive in baseball, because they help remind us that beyond the sport there is a science. Baseball is made of angles and force, physics and math. Now who wouldn't want to go out on a sunny afternoon and watch all that? Money Unfortunately, the things that make you can also be the things that break you. Another set of numbers has become prominent in baseball that doesn't add so much to the joy of the game. That would be salaries, trade-offs, endorsements and other things involved with money. While sports are fun to watch, somebody must pay the athletes to do it. And when money changes hands in amount that it does in baseball it's bound to have an effect on what goes on the field. When a batter is averaging .125 and he is getting paid $1.8 million to do it suddenly every missed pitch seems like a stab to the wallet as well as the heart. Overall, baseball has been America's pastime for a long time and that it will probably continue long into the future. However, when you look around at the crowds of folks who attend the games don't be surprised to see people with laptops, glasses and polo shirts. The nerds are drawn to numbers and they are here to stay.
Learning good golf swing mechanics
We all want to have more power in our golf swing. Want to see that ball go sailing off the tee straight down the fairway a couple of hundred yards. Now of course we've all also seen someone consistently do that at a course on Sunday afternoon, so effortlessly, just like the club was slicing through butter. What do these people with the perfect golf swing and a perfect drive every time have that we don't have. Is it speed, strength, or a better driver? Chances are none of the above, what they have mastered is their golf swing mechanics. Of course a better driver made of the latest and greatest material will help add a few yards to your drive, also having strength in the right muscles will help out. How ever all of these things aren't worth a dime if you're not using them correctly. And to use them correctly you need to have the right swing mechanics down. Until you understand exactly what happens when you swing a golf club, how the weight is transferred and how mechanics come into play rather then brute force and strength you'll continue to either duff the ball or be plagued by that evil hook or slice. So is this to say that you should just purchase an inexpensive club, and any out of shape bum can learn to drive a winning ball? No not at all, your equipment and physical fitness level are very important, how ever you need to learn to use it right. A bad swing will only produce one thing, bad results. Whether it's a good club or a bad club, or your strong or weak. If you're over the top with your golf swing, or to far on the inside it will come out in the direction of the ball. Being able to correct this error through your swing mechanics is when you've really learned to master the controllable par of this crazy game. Working consistently to tweak your swing through mechanics is how you'll slowly but surely shave those strokes off of your handicap. The key is know the right way to do it in the first place so you have a base to work from. It is a lot more difficult for us to unlearn bad habits in our swing sequence then it is to take the time to learn the correct movements and technique the first time around. Remember bad habits are difficult to break, and this is no different in golf then it is in any other area of life. Take advantage of Golf Instruction One big let down with amateur golfers is that they get discouraged when they don't see improvement after practicing and practicing at the driving range. All they're learning to do is slice that ball further and further rather then discovering how to correct it and drive it straighter and straighter. This can all be corrected by introducing the correct instruction to your practicing regime. Whether it's a quality instructional video or book, or you register for lessons from the local pro you need a solid foundation to understand why a golf ball will tend to slice or hook. Or where the correction can be made in your swing to stop topping the ball. Without proper instruction you can't fully understand correct golf swing mechanics, and will continue to be frustrated.

Ways to avoid injuries for triathlon beginners
Beginning to train for a triathlon can be as hard as it sounds. Well, it means changing your usual everyday routine and adding some time on the track, on your bike, at the gym, and in the water. But those are not the only things you must consider. You should also think of the possible risks that might happen before during and after your training. You must remember this: injuries do exist but can be prevented. And the most common are caused by over-training, wrong set of gears, and improper practices. Here are 5 ways to prevent injuries from taking away your triathlon dream: Stretching – Before you begin your training, you must do some stretching. This would release the tension of your tightened tendon and muscles. There are some studies conducted that people who do not stretch before and after stretching are more prone to injuries. Some also argue about the necessity of stretching but taking outmost precaution would certainly lead you from disregarding this argument. Training duration – You simply cannot go from 0 to 5k in an instant. You must take it gradually. Over-training often causes injuries. Make sure you take one step at a take and not take on giant leap towards your goal. Keep your training plan realistic. In this way, give your body the time to adapt to the training. Rest – After training for several hours on one day, your body needs to rest. Again, a good rest would give your body the time to adapt to the training. This would prevent from over stressing your muscles and tendons that can result to injuries. Footwear – There is a particular shoe for running and cycling. And this should be taken seriously. The most punished part of your body during training and the actual triathlon itself are your feet so make sure that you have the proper footwear for your run and for your bike. Also remember that friction blister is common to those who wear old shoes, shoes with inadequate soles, and improper shoe fitting. Gears – If you have the history of ankle injury, keeping your ankle protected with braces would be a good idea. Tendonitis, a common effect of over training could be avoided if you wear proper ankle braces. A nice swimwear would give you better movement on water. And since you also have your swimwear on during the entire race, a good and well-fitted one is a must have.

Scale model train layouts developing your first one
To develop your model train layout there are four major steps to take before you begin construction: 1: Select the size of your model train, that is the scale or gauge. Scales range from micro-sized Z scale for tiny layouts to giant G-scale used mostly for outdoor garden layouts. Visit hobby shops or model train websites and see the various scales available. Staff at a hobby shop will usually be happy to point out the advantages and/or disadvantages of each scale. Your decision about scale/size will be partly based on the space available for your layout. The most popular scales are O scale – which is 1/48th actual size and the smaller HO scale which is 1/87th actual size. As a result of being the two most popular scales these have the greatest variety of locomotives, cars and accessories available. 2: Learn about layouts for the scale you have chosen by reading magazines such as O Gauge Railroading and Classic Toy Trains (these two are for O scale). Model Railroading provides detailed information about HO and N scale. All are full of information - all the good train hobby stores carry them or you can pick them up at places like Barnes & Noble or Amazon. Also visit websites related to your scale choice – Google the term –"model train layouts" for a great listing of sites with information about model train layouts. Re-visit hobby shops you visited for information when deciding on the scale of your model train set and ask questions about layout. The good ones can provide helpful advice and they sell how-to books on wiring, scenery, detailing and other subjects. 3: You then need to decide on how you start. Do you want to start with a little layout that can later be extended? Do you want to set up a permanent layout right from the start? Do you want to develop a 'theme' layout – say a layout depicting California logging railroads in the 1920s? The major decisions are to determine your objective and set the size parameters for your layout. Don't forget that the size parameters for your layout will be determined largely by the space you have available – a basement? the corner of a lounge room? portion of your garage? etc. 4: Begin making sketches and drawings on plain paper – it's easier to make changes to your drawing than to have to physically pry up a section of track that 'went wrong'. Refer back to magazines and websites during this planning stage – just to see what others have done. Many magazines and websites will have photos of layouts appropriate to the scale you have chosen. There are even some computer programs which can help you with designing your layout - look for ads in model train magazines.

Which mlb tickets provided a chance to see the 2006 al award winners
It’s been quite a season in the American League, and fans around the league agreed, as they set several records in terms of MLB tickets purchased. They got to see several unbelievable performances, and things are going to get quite interesting in the postseason, even though several spots have yet to be determined. We’d like to get a jump on the media and voters and make our predictions for the AL award winners for 2006. MVP: Derek Jeter This is a tough call, as there are players, such as David Ortiz, who had better statistical seasons than Jeter, but there are a few reasons why Jeter will win. He was the glue on a team that not only won the AL East, but also a team that went through a very volatile season. Jeter remains the quiet leader and the guy who brings a calming influence and a confidence to the Yankees. Not to mention, Jeter will probably finish high on many ballots regardless of whether he’s voted first, which will most likely give him the points necessary to win the award. The bottom line is he deserves it. Cy Young: Johan Santana This choice is a bit easier. Santana fulfills all the typical requirements for a Cy Young winner. He plays on a winning team and he leads the AL in the following categories: wins, ERA, IP, SO, BAA, WHIP and winning percentage. That’s a dominant line, and Santana held it together for the Twins’ surge towards the postseason when promising staff mate Francisco Liriano went down with injury. Santana will be a proud addition to the list of Cy Young winners. Comeback Player of the Year: Frank Thomas This one is a no-brainer, as Thomas had all but disappeared from the sport in recent years. In his prime, the “Big Hurt” could move MLB tickets all by himself, but injuries, age and dwindling production appeared to get the best of him. He was basically an afterthought when he moved to Oakland, but he has provided the power in the A’s lineup that they seemed to lack for years. All Thomas has done this year is rank in the top 10 in the AL in every offensive category. Manager of the Year: Jim Leyland Leyland’s work with the Tigers has been nothing short of amazing. He took a team that no one was talking about in the spring and led them to a start that’s basically providing the cushion that should allow them to hang on to their postseason spot. The Tigers are a young team that needed to learn how to win, and Leyland is instilling that winning mentality. That’s no small task for a team and organization that has been mired in losing for several years. Caveat - If the Tigers somehow fail to qualify for the postseason, Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire could wind up with this award. Rookie of the Year: Justin Verlander Verlander came to the Tigers and basically stepped in as the number one starter immediately. That’s a lot to accomplish for a rookie on a team that’s been leading the division for most of the season, and Verlander’s stats speak for themselves. He ranks in the top 10 in the AL in wins and ERA, and assuming the Tigers get to the postseason, he’s going to be vital to the Tigers’ chances. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with these predictions, we all have to agree that it’s been a great year for MLB tickets, as every one of these awards has several deserving candidates.

The weekend golfers short game
If you're like me, a weekend warrior golfer, then no doubt you struggle with your game from about 50 feet out into the green. Every time I hit my 2nd (or 3rd shot on a par 5) into the green and land it forty to sixty feet away I cringe at the thought of having to make a chip shot to land with in two putt range from the pin. For most beginner to intermediate golfers chipping is a very difficult part of their game. This is for two reasons, it does require quite a bit of skill and we don't practice it enough. What's the number one thing most recreational golfers practice? Their drive right, we spend hours on end at the driving range trying straighten out our drives, get a few more yards out of it. Yet if we spent only half that time working on our short game we'd see amazing results in lower scores and increased accuracy. Up to two thirds of our game is played in and around the green, yet most holes only have one drive (unless you put it in the woods or a water hazard), and of course par threes don't even require a wood or long iron. Yet we continue to practice our drive, and not work on chipping. I have a few theories about this, chipping isn't as glamorous as using your driver, not as many people see you chipping as they do off the tee box so you want to look good for others, and you can't brag that well about a perfect chip to putt in for par as you can about your 250 yard drive on number 7 this morning. How ever the smart amateur golfers will heed my warning when I say, practice makes perfect in golf, and practicing chipping and learning the skills needed to make chip shots consistently will reduce your handicap. So what do you need to know to make great chip shots. The first thing is your skill set, know what your capable of don't try to be super man recognize what you can and cannot do. For most beginner golfers using a hybrid club or fairway wood is best it allows you to keep good control of the ball and be consistent. If you're a golfer in the high eighties or low nineties give your 8-iron a try, it's a little more technical to chip the ball and roll it but with practice it can be mastered. What so many of us do is go right for our pitching wedge, or sand wedge and try to flop the ball perfectly on the green and we end of sending it flying over the green, off to the side, or only 10 feet in front of us. Those clubs should be restricted to golfers under 80 to perfect. Again know your skill set, and practice practice practice. Remember spending time on that two thirds of your game will pay off.

Summer youth camps pack a lot of fun
Remember those long, hot days of summer vacation without much to do? Hanging out with friends was a blast for a while, but before too long, things got a little boring. Why have your kids endure the same monotony when summer youth camps can pack in the fun? Today's summer youth camps offer a lot more excitement than they did in the past. These camps aren't just for fishing, hiking, boating and team volleyball anymore. The reality is the number of specialty camps for youth is on the rise. There's something out there for just about anyone to enjoy. Summer camps offer two basic overall styles, but are broken down into special interests from there. The main styles for these camps are: * Overnight. Whether these camp run for a week, two weeks or the entire summer, these venues are a little more costly because they provide around-the-clock care. In addition, they tend to offer an array of activities for youth, as well. These camps are favored by many for their ability to let kids get away from it all while giving mom and dad a bit of a break, too. * Day camps. These camps offer daytime programming only. They tend to run in weekly or two-week increments, but can also span an entire summer. The fees for these camps are a little more in reach for most, generally. The perk with these is that kids return home every night ready to share their stories of adventure and often learning. While most summer youth camps follow the above patterns for overall style, they come in a variety of special interests. This means just about any child is likely to find there is a camp out there that is ideal. Some of the options for these types of camps include: * Wilderness. These are the camps many remember from their youth. Set up in cabins or even with tents, this type of setting is designed to help kids get back to nature, while having some fun and adventure along the way. * Band. Designed to help youth further their musical abilities, these camps tend to offer pretty focused study on instruments, but they also provide some of the fun of wilderness camps, or can. * Arts camps. Similar to the band camp format, these venues will focus in on visual or performing arts. Many offer a lot of the outdoors fun of regular summer camps, as well. * Sports camps. Athletes looking to hone their skills will find there are a variety of these available. Whether they're for field hockey, football or track and field, these camps will either focus in on one particular sport, or they will offer a variety for participants to choose from. * Church, community. These camps are typically hosted right in a child's own hometown. They can follow an overnight or daytime only format. Activities here range from organized sports and field trips to even religious lessons (in the case of church camps), swimming, hiking and more. Summer youth camps are not one-size-fits-all propositions any more. There are camps out there to meet just about any personal need or taste.

Italy police doesn t play poker sportivo
Police in Rome, Italy, last weekend, raided a poker tournament last and confiscated all objects used in the the game, including 12 poker tables, all the chips and cards. The game was running for less than an hour before the local "cops" s came. Over 100 players registered for the tournament. "But it's a legal way for playing" said A. F., the director of the club and organizer of the tournment. Permitted from the italian law (FINANZIARIA 2007). The prize pool was around the 3.000 Euro, this looked like being a highly successful event for organiser, but the prize pool was not high ( that's shoud mean in Italy: NO GAMBLOING). However, within an hour of the game starting the italian police had other ideas, and closed the tournment. Gambling not in one of the only 4 Italian Casinos (Casino di Campione, Casino di Saint Vincent, Casino di Venezia and Casino di Sanremo)is illegal in Italy and this appears to be the basis of the police intervention. According to italian law, "Those who profit, directly or indirectly, from organizing gambling in facilities that they are responsible for, should be punished for gambling promotion". That's mean also that if you put a promotional banner of an online casino on your internet site you committe a crime. The director of the club was shocked by the police action. Said that, "did not believe anything illegal had taken place in his club, the only sum he earned was the rent of the club by a bridge and poker club...obout 220 Euro." But is it legal to collect fee when people play bingo or bridge in Italy? But is it legal if you pay a win of a poker tournment? But is it legal to organize a poker tournment in Italy? "If collecting fee is legal when people play Bingo, it should be legal to collect the same fees for poker players, it's unfair that playing for money is only illegal when playing poker". The italian police said that the case is being investigated not only as a violation of the gambling laws, but also as a violation of the financial laws
